Do I need to be home during a roof replacement?

Short answer: not the whole time. Here’s when it helps to be there, what the work is like if you stay, and how to get your home ready before the crew arrives.

The short answer

In short: No, you don’t need to be home for the whole job. It helps to be there for a quick walkthrough on the first morning and a final walkthrough at the end, and to be reachable by phone in between. You can stay home while the crew works, but expect loud noise and some vibration, especially on the day the old roof comes off.

When should I be there?

  • The first morning. A few minutes with the project lead to confirm the scope, where materials and the dumpster go, and anything the crew should know about gates, pets, or sprinklers.
  • By phone, if the deck needs work. Once the old roof is off, damaged roof boards sometimes show up. We send photos and explain what we found before anything outside the agreed scope.
  • The final walkthrough. Walk the roof line and yard with us, see photos of the finished work, and ask questions.

Most homes take several days to two weeks, depending on size, roofing material, weather, and inspections. Your written estimate includes a schedule for your project.

Can I stay home while the roof is replaced?

Yes. Most homeowners do. What to expect:

  • Noise. Tear-off and nailing are loud, and rooms right under the roof hear it most. The first day or two is usually the noisiest.
  • Vibration. Hammering can shake pictures, mirrors, and shelves, mostly on the top floor.
  • Dust in the attic. Small debris can fall through gaps in the roof boards during tear-off. Living spaces usually stay clean.
  • Activity outside. A dumpster in the driveway, material deliveries, and crew coming and going.

Who might want to be away for a day or two?

Consider planning the loudest days away from home if you have a baby who naps, pets that are stressed by noise, important video calls, or someone who is sick or recovering. Plenty of people simply stay out during tear-off and come back once the new roof is going on.

How do I get my home ready?

  1. Clear the driveway.Move cars out the night before. The crew needs the space for the dumpster and materials.
  2. Clear the yard edges.Move patio furniture, grills, potted plants, and toys away from the house.
  3. Take down wall hangings.Remove pictures, mirrors, and fragile items from walls and shelves, especially on the top floor.
  4. Cover the attic.Cover stored items with sheets or tarps, or move valuables out. Do the same in a garage with an open ceiling.
  5. Plan for pets and kids.Keep them indoors or away while the crew works.
  6. Leave access.Unlock side gates, and let us know where we can use an outdoor outlet.
  7. Give neighbors a heads-up.Especially if you share a driveway or a fence line.

What do we take care of?

We cover your landscaping, clean up every day, run a magnetic nail sweep, and haul away all debris. One project lead keeps you posted from start to finish. We also file the permit and meet the inspector on site. In Calabasas, that means a roof nailing or deck inspection during the job and a final inspection at the end. Our Calabasas roof permit guide covers the steps. See roof replacement for what every reroof includes.

Re-roofing tile? A lift and relay works the same way: the tile comes off and goes back on, so the same tips apply.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work from home during a roof replacement?

You can, but expect loud hammering and vibration, especially on tear-off day. If you have important calls, plan to work from a room on the far side of the house, or somewhere else for the first day or two.

Is a roof replacement safe for my pets and kids?

Keep them indoors or away from the house while the crew works. Debris and nails can fall around the edges of the roof, and the noise upsets many pets. A quiet room or a day with family or friends usually works best.

Will dust get inside my house?

Some dust and small debris can fall through gaps in the roof boards into the attic while the old roof comes off. Living spaces usually stay clean, but cover anything stored in the attic or under an open garage ceiling.

Do I need to be home for the city inspection?

Usually not. In Calabasas the city inspects the roof nailing or deck during the job and does a final inspection at the end, and the inspector checks the roof itself. We schedule both and meet the inspector on site. Just make sure the side gate is open.
