What is a cool roof?
A cool roof uses materials with high solar reflectance and thermal emittance, so it reflects more sunlight and sheds heat faster than a conventional roof. On hot Calabasas summer afternoons, that means a cooler attic, less strain on your air conditioning, and a more comfortable home.
Cool roof options
Cool-rated tile
Clay and concrete tile in lighter, reflective finishes that keep the Mediterranean look.
Cool-rated shingles
Asphalt shingles with reflective granules, available in many colors.
White membranes
TPO and other single-ply membranes for flat and low-slope roofs.
Reflective coatings
Elastomeric and silicone coatings that can restore and cool existing flat roofs.
Cool roofs and Title 24
California’s Energy Code (Title 24, Part 6) can require cool-roof products when about half or more of a roof is replaced or recovered, depending on the building’s climate zone and roof slope. Compliance products must be tested and labeled by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC).
We confirm whether your project triggers the requirement, select CRRC-listed products that also meet Calabasas’ Class A fire rating, and provide the documentation needed for your permit.
Worried about color?
Cool roofs don’t have to be bright white. Many tile and shingle products achieve cool-roof ratings in earth tones that fit Calabasas neighborhoods and HOA guidelines.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cool roof required for my reroof?
It depends on how much of the roof is being replaced, its slope, and your climate zone. We check the current Energy Code and City of Calabasas requirements for your specific project. In City of Los Angeles neighborhoods, LADBS also applies its own cool-roof rule to many residential reroofs.
Will a cool roof lower my energy bills?
A cool roof reduces the heat your roof absorbs, which typically lowers cooling demand. Actual savings vary with insulation, ventilation, shading, and how you use your air conditioning.
